Byzantium is SERICA's descent into the golden half-light of the Eastern Roman Empire—the empire that outlasted Rome by a thousand years, ruled from Constantinople, and dressed its emperors, its churches, and its God in gold. When the first Russian emissaries entered Hagia Sophia in the tenth century, they reported that they did not know whether they were in heaven or on earth. The golden mosaics—millions of tesserae covering every surface of the dome—created a light that had no single source. It seemed to emanate from the walls themselves.
This is the aesthetic that the Byzantium series translates into wearable form. The signature technique is woven gold chain—a craft inherited from Byzantine goldsmiths who worked wire so fine it could be mistaken for spun silk, linking each loop by hand to create a fabric of metal. The surface is G2 Byzantine Gold: rich, layered, warm enough to suggest both imperial treasury and church sanctuary. Enamel inlays—a technique perfected in Constantinople's imperial workshops—add the deep purple of the porphyrogennetos, the child born in the Purple Chamber, destined to rule.
Gold upon gold. Empire upon empire. Layer upon layer of sacred light. The iconostasis, the screen of icons that separated the earthly from the divine in every Orthodox church, becomes a design logic: the pendant framed like a sacred image, the ring set like a reliquary, the earring catching light like a mosaic tessera suspended in the dome of a cathedral that, even in ruins, still burns.
